Getting Ready for the Interview
Even though you may already be in your first “official” job as a veterinarian, you will probably work at several other positions throughout your career. Here is a list of simple but essential tips to ensure a successful interview:
- Dress for success – professional attire is expected.
- Research the practice and veterinarian prior to the interview. Check their Web site, google the doctor, etc.
- Prepare a list of questions for the veterinarian – show that you are prepared (i.e. after hours emergencies, support staff, etc.).
- Have two or three special interests that you bring with you to expand the practice. Show that you will generate income that will help cover your future salary.
- At least one working interview is a must. Be sure to talk to other employees, check available medications and equipment, and review medical records.
- Be aware that the last thing discussed is typically salary. Be knowledgeable about different salary methods such as:
- Flat Salary
- Commission
- Production Based Salary (a combination of Flat and Commission)
After the interview, be sure to follow up with a thank you letter acknowledging the interview and stating your interest in pursuing the position.
